CEO and Managing Director Tim Oldham provides his takeaways from participating in a panel discussion at Australia Biologics Festival today discussing the current and future state of the Australian biologics market:

I was privileged to participate in a panel discussion at Australia Biologics Festival today discussing the current and future state of the Australian biologics market. The big takeaway for me: we can grow our local industry by working out how to assemble technologies to build companies, not doing what we have done in the past and creating companies to fund individual product development.

Local strengths remain, are getting stronger

The sector is growing rapidly, as much as 40% in recent times

Services businesses such as clinical trials and bioanalytics have driven much of this, as well as a new wave of biotech companies achieving drug approvals from US FDA.

Biologics manufacturing capability is growing for example through CSIRO and BioCina, both represented on the panel , replacing some of the small molecule manufacturing we are losing

Our research capability remains world class

Capital markets are coming out of the deep freeze, but will be more discerning than in 2021

Capital is returning to the sector, through new VC funds in Australia, a current bias of research grants to translation and record global VC fund raisings in 2023

There is plenty of capital waiting to invest – but will be more discerning and demanding of differentiated technology than in 2021

There is encouraging new VC funding available in Singapore and Hong Kong

Public markets will likely lag VC markets due to global economic and political uncertainty, but IPOs are starting to get away

Opportunities – build sustainable companies

Work out how to assemble technologies to build companies, rather than creating companies to fund individual product development as we have in the past. This has multiple advantages, including ability to access US sources of funding, managing capital markets through multiple products creating regular news flow, creating sustainable jobs and employment, increases likelihood of local clinical trials and manufacturing with spill-over economic benefits

To access offshore capital, need to spend time in the market

When creating biologic products, think about manufacturing and scale-up early
